Review: The Perfect Nanny

The Perfect Nanny by Leïla Slimani
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Starting with the horrific what, this short novel slowly and intensely draws out the why. It is suspenseful, unsettling, and quite chilling in parts. It does a wonderful job of portraying the uneasy ambiguity of the relationship between the nanny and her charges and the nanny and her employers. Is she family, friend, employee …? Wonderfully full of subtle social commentary on social class, race, motherhood vs. work also.

Review: Dear Mr. M

Dear Mr. M
Dear Mr. M by Herman Koch
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A literary mystery that requires attention. Like The Dinner, I didn’t particularly care for any of the characters, but the storytelling and twists are quite compelling. Koch’s style is inventive, sardonically humorous, and uncomfortable in places. Recommended if you like your mysteries dark and complicated.
