What Does Your Digital Footprint Say About You?

Did you know that you have a digital reputation? Everything you say and do creates an image of you. How people — friends, family, classmates, neighbors, professional colleagues, and future employers — see you will in part come from the digital footprint that you leave behind. This digital footprint is not only comprised of everything you write and post online, but also includes everything other people write about you and tag you in. Every website you visit, picture you like, and video you share will impact your digital footprint and shape your digital reputation. This month’s library display includes some interesting statistics and information about our digital footprints and some of the precautions we can take to protect our digital reputation. The books we feature this month address proper online etiquette, the potential downsides and risks of social media, cyberbullying and other pitfalls we may encounter while using the Internet.  Stop by the Katherine Brush Library to check out our display and learn more.

Review: The Circle

The Circle
The Circle by Dave Eggers
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I wanted to like this more than I did. It’s a clever play on a social networking dystopian future, but it seems a little too “set up” and obvious. A good read, not a great read. Depending on your level of online involvement and your personal level of cynicism about that level, you might like it more or less than I did!
