Review: The Perfect Nanny

The Perfect Nanny by Leïla Slimani
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Starting with the horrific what, this short novel slowly and intensely draws out the why. It is suspenseful, unsettling, and quite chilling in parts. It does a wonderful job of portraying the uneasy ambiguity of the relationship between the nanny and her charges and the nanny and her employers. Is she family, friend, employee …? Wonderfully full of subtle social commentary on social class, race, motherhood vs. work also.
